The Ring – Page 4, June, 1946 edition. James Braddock vs Max Schmeling ticket
The bottom ticket is one of the rarest and oddest souvenirs in the collection of Nat Fleisher, Ring editor.
It depicts the famed “Phantom Fight” for the heavyweight title between Max Schmeling and Jimmy Braddock on June 3, 1937, although it was obvious that Braddock would never be the party of the second part, as he was at that moment preparing to defend his crown against Joe Louis on June 22 in Chicago. Schmeling actually completed training at Speculator, N.Y., for this mock battle, seriously weighed in on the afternoon it was scheduled, then announced that he would lay claim to the title, something he never did.
